Manchester City blast. Tottenham blew it 4-0, defence on fire
Not even the most pessimistic Manchester City fan painted Saturday night as miserable. Tottenham stifled him on home soil from the very beginning, eventually celebrating a 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.
Not even the most pessimistic Manchester City fan painted Saturday night as miserable. Tottenham stifled him at home from the start, eventually celebrating a 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.
- Tottenham started their big night with the opening goal in the 15th minute
- James Maddison added a second before half-time
- Manchester lose their fifth game in a row
Against Tottenham, Manchester were eager to break their black streak, having lost four games in a row through all competitions. In the league to Bournemouth and Brighton, in the Champions League they were beaten by Sporting Lisbon and in the Carabao Cup they fell to Tottenham.
It was the latter team that awaited him this time. And it was on home soil, which was very important for Guardiola, because the Spanish manager and his Citizens have long been struggling in away games with Spurs.
After all, even the entire four-match winless streak is completely made up of away games. In all four duels, it was confirmed that the Citizens are plagued by defence, in total they got ten goals in this quartet of games.
And the trouble continued this time. Although Citizens played better in the beginning of the match, they didn’t convert any chances into dangerous shots, while Tottenham took the first opportunity. James Maddison finished it off.
At the same time, the discomfort was evident on Erling Haaland, who missed two very good chances. The first time he let Guglielmo Vicario stand out, the second time he missed the space between the three posts.
On the other side, Heung Min Son had a fantastic shot, but Ederson made an even better save. But in the 20th minute, he was fishing the ball out of the net for the second time, and again Maddison overcame it, this time with a lob.
An unhinged Manchester couldn’t find an answer, not even getting a shot off with most of their actions. Winger Savinho had the most dangerous chance, but Vicario once again confirmed that he was catching the ball in this game. The visitors went into the cabins with a 2: 0 lead.
Tottenham added more goals in the second half
Even after the change of sides, not much changed and in the 52nd minute came the third penalty. A quick Spurs action was finished by Pedro Porro with a shot under the crossbar.
The Citizens were clearly cursed when Haaland finally hit the ball well, hitting the crossbar. The visitors, on the other hand, were able to attack the open defence with gusto, with Dejan Kulusevski heading into the middle of the goal in another opportunity.
It was as if Manchester themselves no longer believed in a positive result. Promising chances were thrown away, first by central midfielder Ilkay Gündogan, then by cannonballer Haaland. At the very end, the game was basically over, with Brennan Johnson adding a fourth goal for the visitors in stoppage time.
Manchester thus lost their fifth game in a row through all competitions. If Liverpool wins against last Southampton on Sunday, the loss to the league leaders will already be eight points.
