Manchester City are out of the Champions League! Defending champion falls to penalty kicks, Real Madrid reach semi-finals

The opening match ended in a 3-3 draw and when the fans in the stadium didn’t know the winner in the rematch, the match went to penalty kicks. Real Madrid were the lucky ones and, although the underdog, they are celebrating their progress to the semi-finals where they can look forward to facing Bayern.

The opening match was an early final. Both teams gave an excellent performance, we saw open football full of beautiful goals. In the end, there were six and the game ended in a draw. It was clear that the rematch would be a hard fought battle.

Rodrygo had the first big chance in the 12th and scored straight away. Vinicius found him free in front of goal and Rodrygo missed the ball perfectly, but Ederson only cleared it to him and then had no problem getting the ball behind his back.

Manchester City worked hard, Erling Haaland directed his header just over the bar in the 17th minute and two minutes later he headed a little better, but not accurately. Another of his headers hit only the crossbar and Bernardo Silva’s finish was not accurate.

City’s pressure escalated for the rest of the first half, but no goal came of it. 9 corners will be proof, but Real defended reliably and didn’t allow Citizens’ offensive players to score.

Right at the start of the second half, Jack Grealish had a beautiful shot from a volley, but his shot was brilliantly covered by Lunin. Manchester City continued to attack, Nacho Fernández kicked the ball almost out of the goal line.

Phil Foden’s follow-up attempt was covered by Lunin and the Ukrainian goalkeeper was at it again in the 70th minute when he nicely cleared Grealish’s shot. It looked like he was going for a clean sheet, but the 76th minute changed everything.

De Bruyne found the ball after a deflected shot and from a promising situation he didn’t hesitate. Suddenly, the game was open again and the home team was on a roll. De Bruyne sent in a beautiful shot even a few minutes later, but once again the excellent Lunin showed up.

And for the third time, De Bruyne, this time from a small area, missed an almost 100 percent chance and headed the ball over the bar. After the tie, it had to go to extra time, but we didn’t get a goal, so it was on to penalty kicks.

Both Silva and Kovacic missed them on City’s side, and Real could enjoy the progress, who can look forward to facing Bayern in the semi-finals. Citizens sad, after an excellent performance, elimination is cruel for them.
