English champion Manchester City is trying to plug the hole at left-back before the start of the season. The club is looking to bring in several players, but relying on their own youngster could also be in play. So what are the options?
Sergio Gomez
the 21-year-old Belgian Anderlecht player who came through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy. He was bought out of Barcelona’s academy by Borussia Dortmund when he was 17.
In the Bundesliga, he only came off the bench twice. His two-year loan spell at Huesca is also worth mentioning.
Gomez is currently the most talked about option at left-back. His price tag is expected to be somewhere between 15 and 20 million euros.
If Gomez doesn’t make it at City then a move to Girona, Manchester City’s partner club, is said to be in the cards.
Borna Sosa
Another of the plethora of Croatian talented players. Sosa made his way to Bundesliga side Stuttgart via Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2018. He has already fully established himself in the German team and has become one of their key players.
He has also already made his debut for the Croatian national team. However, his misfortune is frequent injuries, which could be exacerbated in England’s demanding schedule.
Alejandro Grimaldo
Also a Barcelona La Masia offspring, he is currently a key player for Benfica Lisbon. From the left-back position, he recorded a 5+5 record last season.
Of the above mentioned players, he probably has the most quality. However, he is no longer of much interest to City because of his age, as he will turn 27 in September.
Joshua Wilson-Esbrand
The talented Manchester City offspring has already slowly started to peek into the first team last season. He got his chance in the League Cup against Wycombe, for example.
In a post-match interview after the friendly against Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola, the coach of the Pale Blues, said of the player: “If we keep an eye on him and avoid injuries, he can be the future of this club.”
