Malmö could not have wished for a more successful 2021. The quality of last year’s Swedish champion was already hinted at in the summer Champions League qualifiers. In it, Malmö made it through four preliminary rounds, something that very few people manage to do.
They started by knocking out Riga, then managed a Nordic derby with Helsinki, then took on last year’s Europa League eight-finalist and advanced to the group stage after a 4-3 win over Ludogorets.
On Saturday, Malmö secured the championship title. Before the last round, it was clear that Di blåe only needed a draw to secure first place. Halmstad, as the 14th team in the table, gave Malmö a hard time and the home fans were relieved when the referee blew the final whistle and ended the match 0:0.
On the other hand, the fans and players of AIK Stockholm were left crying. The traditional Swedish club finished second due to a worse mutual match, on points. The team from the capital has been waiting four years for another league triumph.
Interestingly, two rounds before the end of the competition, four teams had a theoretical chance for the title, besides Malmö and AIK, Djurgarden and Elfsborg. What would a Czech fan give for such an exciting league?
Allsvenskan leaves Östersund, who made a great name for themselves in the 2817/18 season. They made it all the way from the second round of the Europa League to the play-offs, where they were eliminated by Arsenal after a 2:4 aggregate defeat. The team was managed by Graham Potter, the current Brighton manager.
