Five years. That’s exactly how long Mahrez has spent in the Islands, specifically Manchester City. Now, however, the Algerian forward is parting ways with the Citizens, even though he still has two years left on his contract.
The thirty-two-year-old right winger is moving to Saudi Arabia, where he will now wear the Al Ahli club jersey. The latter will send €35 million to Manchester for him.
Mahrez has signed a contract at Al Ahli until 2027. Apart from him, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has also recently left the Premier League for the Saudi Pro League and will link his career with Al-Ettifaq.
“Today marks the end of an unforgettable chapter in my life, a five-year journey full of countless memories. Before leaving, I wanted to thank the board, manager and staff for giving me the chance to prove myself at the highest level,” Mahrez said on his Twitter account.
“Together we broke countless records, achieved what seemed impossible and never stopped believing in ourselves in the challenging times we faced. I’m proud to have been a part of it,” his statement also read.
“Finally, I would like to thank you, Cityzens. From day one I felt like part of the family and you gave me confidence every time I walked on the field in this jersey. I’m leaving today, but I’ll never forget any of you. Thanks for everything,” he added.
Mahrez in Manchester…
The Algerian international moved to Manchester City in the summer of 2018, specifically from Leicester for just under €68 million. During that time, Mahrez appeared in 236 games for the Citizens, in which he recorded a record of 78 goals and 59 assists.
With the English big club, he has dominated the Premier League four times, the Champions League once, the FA Cup twice and the English League Cup three times.
