Maguire: Premier League clubs are angry! What will Newcastle do in England to cause havoc?

Around Newcastle United, a club that has recently been taken over by a new and extremely wealthy owner, there are many questions constantly swirling about what the future might look like. And not just at the club itself, but across the Premier League. According to financial expert Kiearan Maguire, this will not have a positive impact on other teams. Why?

The anger surrounding the Newcastle takeover – that’s the main factor that led to Garry Hoffman’s resignation as Premier League chairman, according to Maguire. The latter announced the news on Wednesday, November 17.

It was Hoffman who held the position for 18 months, overseeing the league’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic in which not only many units but the league itself suffered significant losses.

However, his regime gave the green light to Saudi owners to successfully take over the traditional English team, Newcastle United. Notably, other representatives of the English top flight were vehemently opposed.

The final decision, which then came from Hoffman’s lips, was logically disliked by the rest of the establishment. And that, according to Maguire, is the main reason for his resignation.

“We have to look at the situation with Newcastle from the perspective of the other clubs,” Maguire told Football Insider.

“Zero communication, no notice. Everybody is acting in their own interests here. That’s why Hoffman and his government were ousted, because of them we now have several angry clubs in the Premier League,” he explained.

“The Big Six are obviously disappointed for the very reason that they have another competitor in the fight for the Champions League. The others are upset because their most serious competitor has been saved from the relegation battle,” Maguire adds.

Unfortunately, that’s not all. Maguire goes on to say that Hoffman was secretly in favour of the Super League project, with Newcastle apparently to be one of the teams that would set new trends in football and have the most power.

Yes, this is also why Premier League clubs are currently upset. But there is another factor that will significantly affect the functioning of not just the English top flight, but the entire football market.

This is because, of course, the way it works is that when new owners appear on the scene with money to spare, others have no choice but to react. This is one of the reasons why transfer sums have been continually increased in the past.

Especially so in 2017 and 2018 and when the Qatari owners of French PSG came into the picture. The transfers of Neymar and Mbappé then started a series of transfers whose transfer sums climbed to truly incredible heights.

To give you an example – the transfer of Ousmane Dembélé from Dortmund to Barcelona, just in 2017, was a completely out of the way affair. The value of that transfer at the time was €135 million.

Philippe Coutinho also visited the Catalan big club for the same amount, just a year later. And probably the most bizarre example is the transfer of João Félix to Atlético Madrid. In 2019, the Spanish club shelled out over €127 million to Benfica Lisbon for the then only 20-year-old youngster!

If Newcastle proceed in the same way, they will very likely further upset the already very shaky financial side of the football market with their actions.
