Maguire is working hard and wants to fight for a place at Manchester United. He is being watched by a Portuguese legend with a past at Chelsea and Real Madrid

Harry Maguire doesn’t have it easy. Manchester United bought him in 2019 as the most expensive defender on the planet. That in itself meant a lot of pressure. Harry Maguire doesn’t have it easy. Manchester United bought him in 2019 as the most expensive defender on the planet. That in itself meant a lot of pressure. With his performances so far, the Englishman has not convinced, he is the butt of jokes and criticism. Even though he is the captain, he has fallen out of the lineup. But he’s not giving up.

It was 2017. Manchester United brought in a new signing. A Leicester star, one of the Premier League’s best defenders, a key figure in the England national team. Harry Maguire came for a now unbelievable 87 million euros.

He has become the most expensive defender on the planet. Just moving to Old Trafford is a big step. To come for that kind of money? That means a huge pressure to perform. But Maguire hasn’t won anyone over in all that time.

Every mistake he’s made has been laughed at on social media. He’s often blamed for things he didn’t cause. In short, he has become a sort of lightning rod for all critics.

Of course, it would be a mistake to overlook the fact that his performances certainly don’t match the price he was coming in at, however, when he was given the confidence of Gareth Southgate in the England jersey, he performed better than he did at club level.

Even though he is the captain of Manchester United, he has been sidelined by coach Erik ten Hag. He praises his professionalism and attitude, but he has other horses to back. What’s next for the 30-year-old burly defender? That’s the question.

There’s been speculation about a transfer. Even before Leicester’s relegation, a return made sense. But that’s now out of the question. Maguire certainly has Premier League credentials. Plus, he’s showing a great attitude even now. He’s working hard to fight for a place at Old Trafford.

Instead of enjoying his time off and holidays, he’s headed to Portugal, where he’s been training hard three times a day for three weeks. Plus, he’s spending time with a Portuguese legend with experience at Chelsea and Real Madrid. Ricardo Carvalho is supervising him.

Maguire is doing everything he can to remain a member of the Red Devils. But it remains to be seen if that will be enough. The English stopper is yet to speak to coach ten Hague about his future.
