The images from Sunday’s match between Brazil and Argentina shocked the world. A football holiday has turned into a major disaster. Several police officers and officials came straight to the pitch to pick up four Argentinians who had no business being on the pitch.
The Brazilian rules are clear. Anyone wishing to enter this country who has been in Britain for 14 days prior to arrival must undergo a two-week quarantine.
But Argentina didn’t want to spare its four players, so Martínez, Romero, Lo Celso and Buendía were all nominated for the match, the first three even in the starting line-up.
The Argentine team lied about the fact that these players were not staying in Britain. However, they did not take into account one small detail, the players are live on TV every weekend.
That’s why Brazilian sanitation had to intervene immediately. In the 7th minute of the game, officials and police officers stormed the pitch to take the players who were supposed to be quarantined.
“Anvisa considers this situation to be a serious health risk and has therefore instructed the local health authorities to impose an immediate quarantine on the players, who must not be allowed to move around and be banned from Brazilian territory,” Brazil’s health surveillance agency Anvisa said in a statement.
With Brazil’s coronavirus restrictions in place, coach Tite could not count on nine Premier League players, including star names like Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Alisson and Richarlison.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi reportedly complained why officials waited for the match to start and did not arrive earlier when Argentina is in Brazil for a fourth day.
The players then retired to the booths, and the match was abandoned. Now the prestigious duel is in the hands of the disciplinary committee. Relations between Brazil and Argentina were already at a near standstill, this intervention certainly did not help to improve them.
