Machac fought against the world number one, but left the match as a loser

In the 2nd round of the Masters 1000 tournament Tomáš Macháč, a debutant at this tournament, was up against the fresh world number one in the ATP rankings, Russian Daniil Medvedev. The Czech player failed to advance, but he did not leave a bad impression.

In the very first game Tomas Machac got a break point, unfortunately it was also his last opportunity to take away the Russian’s serve. In the first set, the native of Beroun let his serve be taken only once, but even that was enough for Medvedev to win the first set – 6::3.

In the second set, Medvedev got at least one break point on each of Makhach’s serves, took 2 out of 6 and won the second set 6: 2.

Daniil Medvedev confirmed his role as the favourite and advanced to the next round of the Masters 100 tournament in Indian Wells. For the first time he also played under a neutral flag because of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

If he wants to stay in the number one role after the tournament, he will have to fight his way to at least the quarterfinals. For Tomas Machac, this was his sixth ever meeting with a top 50 player, and his record so far is 1-5.
