Machac didn’t make a surprise, lost to Cressy in four sets
Tomas Machac’s journey at the Australian Open is over. The promising Czech lost to the American Cressy 1:6, 6:3, 1:6, 6:7 and is now out of the tournament. Thanks to his advancement to the second round, he will move up to 126th place in the rankings and will be one step closer to the Top 100.

1.machac’s set went absolutely wrong
The opening of the match did not go well at all for the Czech tennis player. Especially on serve, Macháč lost 2 serves, any hopes of winning the first set were gone so quickly. He lost the opening set 1::6. The talented Czech was in a difficult situation, he needed to show a big turnaround to advance to the 3rd round. Improving his current performance was an absolute must.
The next set went much better for Machac. the 21-year-old improved his serve game, which was very important. The key game of the 2nd set was the 4th game. Macháč played very well on the return and broke Cressy’s serve for the first time. Machac didn’t let the break advantage slip away anymore. 2. he won the set 6::3 and tied the match at 1::1.
Cech’s misery on serve continues
The next set was an exact mirror of the opening set. The Czech tennis player struggled again on serve, losing it twice in the third set. Cressy took advantage of these hesitations perfectly, winning the 3rd set 6::1. Again he got an important lead, which he did not let escape.
Set number 4 was the most evenly matched and brought many dramatic situations. This time both players held their serves until 5::5. In the 11th game Cressy broke Machac’s serve and took the break to 6::5.
It seemed that the match was over. But the young Czech still managed to break. At 5::6 0::30 he won 4 points in a row and managed to level at 6::6.
Dramatic end of the 4th set
The tiebreak decided the fate of the set. The first half of the shortened game went better for Cressy, the American took a 4::2 lead and was again just a few balls away from victory. But Machac fought back again, and managed to turn the unfavourable situation to 5::4. But that was all he could do.
Cressy finally won this dramatic tiebreak 7::5 and decided to advance to the 3rd round. He defeated Machac 6::1, 3::6, 6::1, 7::6, confirming his role as a slight favourite. In the 3rd round he will face the Australian O’Connell, who unexpectedly knocked out Schwartzman. It is already certain that a surprising eight-finalist will emerge from this pair.
Tomas Machac’s tournament journey ends in the 2nd round and he will not improve his Grand Slam best. The winner of this duel is Cressy and it must be said that he deservedly won. Macháč struggled on serve today, which was crucial for him to think about advancing to the 3rd round.
Still, it was a very good tournament from him, he certainly didn’t disgrace himself. His career is only at the beginning, but already he has a very interesting career. More significant grand slam successes will come soon.
