Sparta will challenge Lyon for the second time, this time at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Will it be more successful in its second attempt than in the first?
In the first duel, Leten’s team surprised everyone and maybe even themselves. Haraslín opened the scoring in the 4th minute and the same player increased the score to 2:0 in the 19th minute. Sparta had a good lead over the favoured opponent, but they didn’t hold it for long.
In the 42nd minute Ekambi reduced the deficit, 8 minutes after the break Aouar equalised and in the 67th minute Paquetá completed the turnaround. Although Gusto was sent off for a second yellow card in the 74th minute, Ekambi again increased the score to 4-2 in the 88th. Against a weakened opponent, Sparta could only manage to correct the score in the 96th minute with Ladislav Krejci II.
If Lyon beats Sparta for the second time, they will be promoted. It can be expected that they will approach the match with all seriousness and will not want to leave anything to chance. Especially in their home stadium, where they are very strong, Lyon have never known defeat in front of their own fans this season.
Lyon is a very offensive team. In the Europa League, they average 3 goals per game, scoring 9 goals in three games. It is also making a name for itself in Ligue 1, where it has scored 20 times in 12 rounds and has the fourth best attack in the competition.
Sparta also has no major problems scoring goals. It has scored four times in the Europa League, has set up 32 goals in 13 games in the league and, together with Slavia, boasts the best attack in the competition.
We saw a seven-goal shootout in the first leg at Letná and there is no indication that the rematch will be a defensive showdown.
Given Lyon’s attacking quality, the French side can be expected to secure the win and advance to the spring phase.
