Olympique Lyon has made a disastrous start to the new edition of Ligue 1. Already in the first round it lost 1:2 at Strasbourg, then at home it lost to Montpellier 1:4. The first point for a goalless draw was earned in Nice.
But the 4th round match brought another big explosion. PSG came to Lyon’s stadium for three points for a 4-1 win. It was clear that something had to change, so the club’s management reached for a change of coach.
Laurent Blanc lost his job as coach of the A-team. Gennaro Gattuso has been the most speculated about a possible replacement, with the club reportedly even in talks with him.
However, an agreement between the two parties did not emerge in the end, so Lyon bet on another Italian. Fabio Grosso will lead the famous French club’s squad.
He has experience with Lyon, having been a player there from 2007 to 2009. He won one championship title with them and once in his jersey he also celebrated winning the Coupe de France winner’s trophy.
Grosso retired from playing in 2012, after which he took over the Juventus academy as a coach a year later. From there, he subsequently travelled to Bari, Verona, Brescia or Swiss Zion.
The last time he worked at Frosinone. Grosso led the club to promotion to Serie A, winning the title in Italy’s second highest competition. He left the club in the summer anyway, as he was heading for a new challenge.
