Luxembourg vs. Ireland: preview and betting tips

Published

on

Ireland and Luxembourg will play their final World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday. The islanders will have a trip to a mini-state that they have a lot to bounce back from after losing their first game together.

Luxembourg beat Azerbaijan on Thursday to remain in third place in the group. They only need a draw on Sunday to secure a nice position, but the motivation will be to close 2021 with a win in front of their home crowd.

Ireland spoiled their qualification with a poor start. Although it has not lost its last four qualifying matches, it has long since run out of things to play for. In any case, it will go to Luxembourg after a draw with Portugal.

The mainstay of the home team is Gerson Rodriguez, the skilful striker has scored 7 national team goals since the beginning of this year. Midfielder Danel Sinani boasts a nice 3+3 record.

Ireland don’t score many goals, but 19-year-old striker Troy Parrott is a great weapon, at least from the bench. The long-time mainstay of the team, stopper Shane Duffy, played well against Portugal.

Luxembourg seem to have run out of gunpowder, scoring more than one goal in only one of their last five games. Ireland, on the other hand, has worked particularly hard in defence, conceding just two goals in their last five games.

Given the increased confidence after the draw with Portugal, I expect Ireland to win.
