Luka Modric is one of the driving forces behind Real Madrid’s dominance in 2014-2018. However, even now at 36 years of age, his performances have not let up, earning him applause from the opposition.
Before last season, it looked like Modric’s engagement at Real Madrid was coming to an end, with a younger and more vibrant Federico Valverde stepping in to take his place. But around the turn of October and November, the Croatian midfielder caught his second wind and got back to his amazing form.
Eventually, he wasn’t pushed out of the line-up for the rest of the season and continued to put in great performances. He played 48 competitive games for the White Ballet, and added 13 starts for the Croatian national team.
He has maintained his high standards this season, even though he recently celebrated his 36th birthday. Against Celta Vigo at the weekend, he was one of the best players on the pitch, which earned him a standing ovation from the fans at the Santiago Bernabéu when he was substituted.
His own fans love the Ballon d’Or winner, no doubt about it. But perhaps an even greater honour for Modric is when his qualities can be appreciated by opposing fans. As happened on Wednesday night.
As the Croatian midfielder left the pitch in the 79th minute, the Inter fans at the San Siro applauded him en masse. A truly beautiful gesture from the opposing fans.
