Lose the derby? I take the blame, it’s my fault, thinks Ancelotti. The Real coach pointed to the key factor in the defeat

Sunday’s football programme was very rich indeed and fans may not have known what to watch first. North London derby, there was also the De Klassieker between Ajax and Feyenoord or the famous Madrid derby. Atlético was more successful there, but Real coach Carlo Ancelotti takes the loss on himself.

The home side entered the derby between Atlético and Real Madrid much better, with Álvaro Morata opening the scoring in the fourth minute. He pounced on Samuel Lin’s neat centre and sent the ball into the bottom right corner.

Six minutes later, Los Colchoneros created another opportunity, but this time Jose Maria Gimenez headed just wide.

In the 18th minute it was 2-0. Saúl Niguez sent a centred ball to the onrushing Antoine Griezmann, who directed his shot into the bottom right corner. Real recovered later in the first half and had several chances.

The goal came from a shot from Toni Kroos, who gave Jan Oblak no chance. The White Ballet then pressed their opponents harder, with Eduardo Camavinga scoring the equaliser in the 44th minute.

However, the referee disallowed it for offside. At the start of the second half, Atlético again pulled away to a two-goal difference, with Morata scoring the next goal.

Carlo Ancelotti’s charges then produced more chances, but none of them ended up in the Atlético net. Los Colchoneros won 3-1 and moved up to fifth place in the league table.

It’s my fault, Ancelotti is clear

After the match, the Real coach was understandably unhappy with some parts of Real’s play. But he takes the defeat on his shoulders.

“We didn’t start well and we didn’t defend well. When they went up 2-0, they played the game they wanted to play. Atleti did better than us in that respect,” said Ancelotti, quoted by Football España.

“I think the problem was not the system, but rather the fragility of the defence. We were not compact and they took advantage of that. When the team doesn’t do what it should, it’s my responsibility. I take it on my shoulders, it’s my fault,” he concluded.
