The group stage of the Champions League did not go badly for Liverpool, however, due to a worse score the English finished second behind Napoli.
That is why they could look forward to a tougher opponent in the eighth round. The fate gave them Real Madrid, the defending champions and quite possibly the biggest favourite to win this year’s trophy.
In the double-header, the Spanish team was the favourite, but the first match was played in Liverpool and it was clear that if the home team wanted to have any hope of qualifying, they had to get a good result at Anfield Road.
And the start of the match was perfect for Liverpool. Darwin Núñez sent them into the lead in the fourth minute with a superb penalty.
He was assisted by Mohamed Salah, who increased the lead ten minutes later. And this time, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has a clear conscience.
The Belgian goalkeeper handled a challenging ball sent to him by a teammate, then fumbled and the ball got away to Salah, who had no problem getting it into the net. Liverpool were already two goals up.
After seven minutes, Courtois’ teammates reacted to his blunder, and Vinícius reduced the deficit to 2-1 with a technical shot to put the team from the capital back in the game. However, to make matters worse, Alisson also made a mistake and Vinícius equalised at 2:2.
The turnaround was completed in the second half, Liverpool were disgraced and lost 2: 5 after a goal from Eder Militao and two goals from Karim Benzema.
