Liverpool beat Chelsea 4-1 in the 22nd round of the Premier League to confirm their lead in the table. The Blues were in form, but they had no claim to success against the home side, even though goalscorer Darwin Núñez was unlucky in a red jersey. A much better game was experienced by Conor Bradley, who recorded two assists in addition to his first Premier League goal.
Bradley made the difference in the first half
Darwin Núñez could have put his name on the scoresheet in the eighth minute. He fired hard after a clearance, but Djorde Petrovic intervened and the ball ended up on the crossbar. After 10 minutes the situation repeated itself, this time the goalkeeper managed to knock the ball onto the bar.
In the 23rd minute, however, Liverpool fans were already rejoicing. Diogo Jota headed his shot into the bottom right corner to open the scoring. Conor Bradley assisted the goal and in the 39th minute he made it 2-0. After a through pass, he headed it to the far post. It was the youngster’s first goal in the Premier League.
Núñez could have made the final decision in the first half, but he followed up his unlucky moment and hit the right post from the penalty spot. Still, The Reds outplayed their opponents and were in a much better mood at the break.
Nkunku’s reduction made no difference to Liverpool win
After an hour of play, Nunez threatened again. This time from outside the box he managed to head between the three posts, but his attempt found only the arms of Petrovic, so he could not enjoy the goal again.
The right-back Bradley had a much better game and in the 65th minute he found Dominik Szoboszlai’s head with a precise centre, who made no mistake and increased the score to 3:0. It was the second assist of the night for Bradley.
Chelsea didn’t give up and got an honourable goal in the 71st minute. Christopher Nkunku cleverly kept the ball in the whitewash and, even with defenders coming at him, he was able to turn and fire accurately to the left post to reduce the arrears. Liverpool could have responded back, but Núñez headed just wide of the crossbar.
The Uruguayan was unlucky in his finishing, but he didn’t forget to pass during the game. He showed it in the 79th minute, when he found Luis Díaz in the small corner of the net, who had no problem scoring an easy goal to make it 4-1.
Liverpool thus won and responded to the wins of Manchester City (3:1) and Arsenal (2:1), consolidating their lead in the Premier League with a margin of five points. In their next match, The Reds will challenge the Canaries, while Chelsea will take on Wolves.
