Liverpool clearly dominated the match of the fourth round of the English top competition, welcoming Bournemouth to their stadium.
The Reds opened the scoring in the third minute when Luis Díaz pounced on Firmino’s centre and headed the ball into the bottom right corner of the opponent’s net.
The home side added a second goal after just three minutes. Harvey Ellliott got to the ball and shot into the bottom left corner of the net to increase Liverpool’s lead to 2:0. The fans then had to wait 22 minutes for another accurate shot.
The third goal was scored by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 28th minute. The twenty-three year old right-back sent an uncatchable projectl at the Bournemouth goal. Beautiful.
However, Jürgen Klopp’s charges managed to add two more goals before half-time. The goal to 4: 0 was scored in the 31st minute by the amazing Roberto Firmino, who scored two goals and three assists in this duel. Then Virgil van Dijk struck with a header at the end of the first half.
Setting the historical record straight
With this achievement, the Reds made a significant contribution to the club’s historical tables. The last time Liverpool scored five times in the first half was in 1958.
Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham scored his own goal at the start of the second period, with Firmino, Fabio Carvalho and Díaz making the final score 9:0.
With this result, Liverpool also equalled the historical statistics of the Premier League itself. Only three times in the history of the English top flight has a match ended with this exact result, a 9:0 scoreline.
The first time Manchester United did it was in 1995 against Ipswich, and in the 2019 season Leicester demolished Southampton on their ground. Then in 2021, it was the Manchester players again who inflicted a nine-goal drubbing on Southampton at Old Trafford.
