The second semi-final of the Champions League is over. Liverpool showed their current form and beat Villarreal 2: 0. The Spanish team suffered its first defeat in the knockout stage of this year’s millionaire competition.

A duel that had a clear favourite and a clear underdog started as expected. Liverpool kept the ball more on the ball, Villarreal concentrated firmly on the defensive.

Ten minutes into the game, the first big chance came. Mohamed Salah found Sadio Mané with a beautiful centre in the small area, but he missed the goal with a header. Two minutes later, Luis Díaz broke free on the left wing, but Geronimo Rulli had to double his shot.

After that, the Yellow Submarine levelled the playing field and did not allow the home side any major chances. It wasn’t until the 33rd minute, when Mané turned on the whitewash after a pass from Díaz, but his glancing shot ended just wide of the bar.

In the 42nd minute, the Reds came extremely close to scoring. A few yards outside the box, Thiago hit a beautiful shot, but it was just wide of the crossbar. After that, nothing major happened and it was 0:0.

Just after the change of sides, Liverpool finally took the lead, a deflected ball went to Fabinho after a corner kick, but the linesman correctly ruled offside. Moments later, the Reds actually got the ball. Henderson’s centre from the right was cleared by Estupinan and he unluckily knocked it behind the helpless Rulli.

Only two minutes passed and Liverpool went into a two-goal lead. Salah’s pass behind the defence was used by Mané and the tip of his boot to make it 2-0.

In the rest of the match Liverpool kept the result and will take a two-goal lead into the return leg.
