Czech fans of the world’s best golf received good news on Wednesday afternoon. The Czech version of the Golf Channel acquired the broadcasting rights to the new series LIV Golf, which was created last year. It immediately stirred up the waters after its launch. While one group of fans is excited about the innovative product, the other group of people are resenting the presence of LIV Golf.
“LIV Golf is here and it’s here to stay,” said Greg Norman, CEO of the newly formed “rebel” series, after the inaugural season. It is with a heavy heart that the existence of the new venture has been borne, especially by the US PGA Tour, including its considerable fan base. Their first point of contention is the funding for the competition, which comes from public funds in Saudi Arabia.
The trouble is that the LIV has a virtually bottomless financial resource, luring the world’s leading aces such as Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Lee Westwood and Bryson DeChambeau to extremely lucrative contracts. The PGA Tour has taken major steps to distance itself from LIV Golf if possible by banning all of these players from playing in their tournaments.
The endless tug-of-war that is destroying camaraderie on the course and changing the world of golf will have to be unraveled in the years to come by litigation. In the meantime, LIV Golf has signed a number of other interesting names, plus representatives of the new golf series are expected to unveil more in the coming days.
In addition to generous prizes, LIV Golf is also bringing an innovative format in the form of the so-called ‘shotgun’ or canon start, where all players take to the course at the same time. As a result, one of the three rounds takes just over five hours instead of a full day.
The 54 holes are played with loud music playing over the loudspeakers, breaking away from the classic format of requiring complete silence in the area for the duration of play. And now the Czech version of the Golf Channel has also acquired the broadcasting rights to LIV Golf.
“The LIV Golf series is, in our opinion, currently the most attractive golf spectacle we can offer our viewers. Theinnovative format has already proven itself in the first year of the series and we can’t wait to offer it to Czech golf fans,” says Petr Dědek, owner of the Golf Channel, to the official website of the golf channel.
“We have experienced first-hand how attractive the format is. The on-site atmosphere is truly electrifying, but the LIV Golf experience is also on TV. With all the players on the course during the six-hour live broadcasts, you don’t miss any of them, which can happen with classic tournaments when, for example, the top players are not playing at the weekend,” adds Dědek on the new golf series.
In addition to LIV Golf’s fourteen tournaments this season, Golf Channel will also offer the famous Ryder Cup, the PGA Championship, US Open and The Open, the DP World Tour series, Asian Tour, LPGA and Women’s Majors.
The LIV Golf season kicks off on February 24 at El Camaleon Golf Club in Mexico. It will make successive appearances in the United States, Singapore, Spain and the United Kingdom. The series will then culminate with a team championship in Saudi Arabia in early November. The team aspect is one of the innovative aspects of the series.
