Lionel Messi scored a goal and an assist in Saturday’s French Ligue 1 match at Nice, reaching another historic milestone. His performance has surpassed that of age-old rival Cristiano Ronaldo in European club goals and has already managed to score an incredible 1,000 goals.
Although he is not experiencing the happiest period of his incredible career at the Parc des Princes, facing boos from his own fans, he continues to shatter more and more footballing records. In Saturday’s match of the 30th round of France’s top competition, he shone in the spotlight once again.
Christophe Galtier’s star team was under a lot of pressure ahead of Saturday’s duel at Nice. After two losses in a row, his team had to score again to shake off their pursuers.
He managed to do so thanks to another great performance by the Argentine legend. Lionel Messi first took advantage of Nuno Mendes’ precise ground centre in the 26th minute, before assisting Sergio Ramos’ goal with less than a quarter of an hour left.
Not only did his performance maintain at least a six-point lead at the top of Ligue 1, but he also scored another individual goal.
His goal marked his 702nd on the European club scene, beating his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo by one goal. It took him 105 fewer games to reach this milestone than the Portuguese canon.
But that’s not all. In fact, the assist for stopper Ramos’ goal marked his 298th pass in club football. Combined with his stated number of goals, this means that he has already scored an incredible 1,000 goals on the European stage alone.
Although the club from the French capital has struggled this season, Messi continues to show exceptional individual skills. In 25 league games for PSG’s star-studded team, he has scored 14 goals and recorded the same number of assists.
