The future of Argentina’s idol has been one of the most debated topics across the sporting world this summer. Lionel Messi became a free agent after his contract at PSG expired and there was no shortage of interest in him. The best footballer in history chose to sign for Inter Miami, but Italy was also in the running.

Lionel Messi became a world champion in Qatar, fulfilling a childhood dream, becoming a hero of Argentina and making history once again. Then recently he won a record eighth Ballon d’Or, confirming his status as the best footballer in history.

In the summer, his contract with PSG expired, where he struggled for two years. Life-wise, he was not entirely happy in Paris. Nevertheless, he gave phenomenal performances. As Pep Guardiola said, Messi’s worst season is anyone’s best.

The question was what to do next. He had crazy offers on the table from Saudi Arabia. There was talk in the media of a return to Barcelona. But there were also suitors in the Italian Serie A, specifically Milan. The most talked about club was Inter.

But instead Messi left Europe, headed to the United States and signed for Inter Miami. He also led the still very young club to the first trophy in the club’s history. Now, moreover, he is leading the Argentine national team in qualifying for the next World Cup.

Messi in the AC Milan team?

The legendary Paolo Maldini recently spoke about the Argentine star and revealed that he wanted to bring the eight Ballon d’Or winner to AC Milan.

Maldini was the CEO of AC Milan until June, the club where he spent his entire career. So he had a major influence on transfers. He tried to make a huge move before the Rossoneri unexpectedly sacked him.

“For ten days we tried to bring Lionel Messi to AC Milan. But then we realised it was impossible. Messi is an exceptional player. When I read that he could go to Inter Milan, it scared me,” Football-Italia quoted Maldini as saying.

Messi, however, is now enjoying life in Florida, where he is spreading football joy. Football in the US is also a bit more popular thanks to him, which is great news given that the US is hosting the World Cup in 2026.
