The opening fifteen minutes were cautious, with the home team being a bit more active. Santiago Giménez’s header was inaccurate on the biggest opportunity. Otherwise, it was basically only the home team who combined around the half of the pitch.
In the 25th minute, the home side broke the barrage, and after a quick combination from the defenders, Santiago Giménez celebrated with a lob. At first glance everything was fine, but a replay revealed an offside by the Mexican striker.
Although the players and fans felt wronged, six minutes later a regulation goal fell. Again from Giménez, this time with a ground shot. Feyenoord continued to be the better side, but subsequent attempts from distance did not go between the three posts.
In the second minute of the second half, Ramiz Zerrouki headed a shot from outside the box to the back post. Again, the situation was examined, but everything was fine and Feyenoord went into the box with a 2:0 lead.
Right after the change of sides, Igor Paixão went alone at the goalkeeper, but in a good position he missed badly. On the other side Valentin Castellanos could have reduced the deficit, but he missed the open goal from a small area.
On the other side, the penalty area killer Giménez punished another space in the penalty area, this time just tapping the ball into a half-empty net. Pedro Rodriguez brought the visitors back into the game in the 83rd minute, converting a penalty after a needless foul by the home side.
In stoppage time, the Romans still threatened, but the home side held on to win 3-1. Feyenoord are now in first place, two points ahead of Atletico and Lazio. Celtic are at zero.
