The battle for the top of the La Liga table was clear-cut

The unblemished slate may be over, but the football fairytale continues. It was supposed to be a great footballing feast in the Catalan town, but in the end the players of the football midget faced a harsh reality.

Spanish football fans were shocked to say the least after seven league rounds. The top of the La Liga table belonged to Girona, who had not tasted the bitterness of defeat until the weekend round. Even the biggest favourites to win the title, Barcelona and Real Madrid, had to bow out.

It was Carlo Ancelotti’s selection that travelled to the north-east of Spain in the eighth round of La Liga. And there was certainly no shortage of motivation for both teams. For the winner would be ahead of Barcelona, who moved into first place in Spain’s top competition after Friday’s win over Sevilla.

The match itself started with a big push from the home side, who, driven by the excellent crowd, bit into their more famous opponent. As early as the third minute, Yangel Herrer appeared on the edge of the box but sent his header over the bar. A minute later Viktor Tsygankov was more accurate, but his header this time only hit the bar.

Bellingham with another great performance to help Real Madrid win

But inaccuracy in finishing against an opponent like Real Madrid doesn’t pay off. After a quarter of an hour of play, Bellingham showed another parade of his skills. An outside cut found Joselu, who made no mistake in the face of the home goalkeeper.

It took just four minutes for Los Blancos to strike another blow. After a Kroos corner, Tchouaméni headed home. Bellingham then could have decided the fate of the match before half-time, but after an independent run he let Argentine goalkeeper Gazzaniga stand out.

After the change of sides, Real dropped their aggressiveness defensively, but Girona’s players again failed to take advantage of promising opportunities. The Catalans’ hopes were then ended again by Bellingham, who started a counter-attack from his own half, which he finished himself from a volley after a pass from Joselu.

Nacho’s sending off for a harsh tackle in stoppage time did not change the scoreline, after which the melee ensued. But Real moved back to the top of the La Liga table, one point ahead of second-placed Barcelona. Girona are third.

It must be added that captain Nacho has caused further wrinkles for an already worried Ancelotti, who cannot rely on another stopper after the injuries to Milito and Alaba. On the other hand, Vinícius returned to the game, but it was Bellingham who replaced him after his injury.

Still only 20 years old, Bellingham continues to amaze the football world with his incredible performances. In the new season, he has already scored an impressive seven goals in eight games for the White Ballet, to which he has added two assists.
