Ligue 1 team performance: after a year of drought, PSG is heading for the title again and has strengthened its defence in particular

It is only the second time since 2013 that PSG have failed to win Ligue 1. In 2016/17, the youngsters from Monaco took everyone by surprise, while last season Lille shocked France. And the Qatari sheikhs certainly didn’t like that.

So they decided to strengthen the squad, especially the defence. Not only to win the domestic title again, but also to finally dominate the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain have been hitting their pockets with the purchase of a right-back. They paid 60 million euros for Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan, with bonuses the amount could rise to 80 million euros.

However, other reinforcements have already come for free, so at least the clubs didn’t have to pay anything to the management. In fact, all three players arrived for free at the end of their contracts, but the signing bonus was all the bigger. Namely Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

In particular, the former Real Madrid stopper is a huge boost for Mauricio Pochettino. Although he is getting on in years (36), he has a winning spirit and is crowned with several titles, especially from the Champions League. The very competition that PSG so desperately want.

Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum, on the other hand, has several experiences in the Premier League, plus he won the Eared Cup in 2019 as well. His task will be to elevate a midfield line that has been slightly limp at times.

Donnarumma arrives from AC Milan and will complement Keylor Navas, giving PSG perhaps the best goalkeeping duo in the world.

In attack, the biggest question will be the staying power of Kylian Mbappé. Real Madrid want him badly, the young Frenchman’s contract expires next year and he doesn’t want to extend it.

PSG are thus faced with the decision of whether to sell Mbappé now at least for a profit or let him leave for free in a year’s time.
