British racing driver Lewis Hamilton does not want to wait until the last minute for a new contract and wants to negotiate with Mercedes management on the form of a new deal before the summer break.
Lewis Hamilton has dominated three of the four Grand Prix races this season and leads the standings in the prestigious series with 94 points. He has a 14-point lead over his main rival Max Verstappen. Finn Valtteri Bottas is in third place with 47 points.
In order to concentrate better for the next races, the seven-time world champion would like to start negotiations for a new contract at Mercedes as soon as possible.
“I don’t want to rush things. However, I think it would be wise to sit down and start talks on the subject. I believe it will not affect my performance,” Lewis Hamilton said in an interview with ORF.
Neither Hamilton nor Mercedes representatives want to repeat the long negotiations that took place before the start of the season. In the end, both sides found an agreement and the Hamilton and Mercedes connection continues this season.
“It spoiled my whole winter and I think the other side, led by Toto Wolff, was not happy about it either. Now we want to meet in advance and discuss everything. We don’t want to leave it to the last minute,” Hamilton added.
The phenomenal Briton came to Mercedes in 2013 as Michael Schumacher’s successor and he just equalled the German legend’s record by winning his seventh title last year.
This season, Hamilton is targeting an eighth world title and would become the most successful Formula One driver ever in terms of championship titles. If he extends his contract at Mercedes, he could continue to challenge for championships.
