Lewis Hamilton wants to change his name! What should it look like and when will the change happen?
Lewis Hamilton knows very well how to attract media attention. The British champion decided to have his mother’s maiden name put in his name. But he won’t be the only driver on the grid who already has a long surname.
Lewis Hamilton knows very well how to attract media attention. The British champion decided to have his mother’s maiden name put in his name. But he won’t be the only driver on the grid who already has a long surname.
Hamilton admitted recently that he doesn’t understand the idea of why women almost always have to take their husband’s surname and it is women who subsequently lose their maiden name.
Thus, the Mercedes driver said he wanted his mother’s maiden name (Larbalestier) to continue as Hamilton.
He wants to pay tribute not only to his mother, but also to all women who have lost their maiden name when they marry.
“I am really proud of my family name – Hamilton. But none of you probably know that my mother’s maiden name is Larbalestier. And right now I’m going to put that in my name,” Hamilton said to questions from reporters at the Dubai Expo, his words later quoted by Sky Sports.
“I don’t quite understand the whole idea that when people get married a woman loses her surname. I really want my mum’s name to continue with Hamilton,” he added.
While the seven-time world champion does not expect to successfully complete the change later this season, his team is reportedly working on it and Hamilton wants to make the change as soon as possible.
Hamilton’s current full name is Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, with the latest information suggesting that the surname Larbalestier should appear at the very end of Hamilton’s name.
The entry list doesn’t address this much in F1 though. The proof is in the other drivers with long names. The Spanish and Mexicans in particular overwhelmingly automatically use their mother’s maiden name in their name.
So we have three drivers on the grid who meet these parameters: Sergio Pérez Mendoza, Carlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro and Fernando Alonso Díaz.
