What has long been speculated is officially confirmed. Lewis Hamilton has officially received honorary Brazilian citizenship at a ceremony in the country’s capital, Brasilia. What did the seven-time world champion himself say after the ceremony?
The seven-time Formula One champion was officially named as an honorary citizen of Brazil a few dozen hours ago.
It’s something Hamilton has wanted for a long time, and something he has also been talking about for a very long time.
And for a very long time, this matter has also been dragging on. The push for Hamilton to be made an honorary citizen was already made last year by Congressman André Figueiredo. Specifically after the native Briton completely dominated last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix.
The Brazilian parliament approved Hamilton’s citizenship in June this year and he also received a medal at the ceremony.
Hamilton’s affinity with Brazil began by watching his childhood hero Ayrton Senna win his home races at the Interlagos circuit in 1991 and 1993. Moreover, it’s no secret that Hamilton has always admired Senna and has made that known in several of his interviews.
It should be added, it was the Interlagos circuit where Hamilton won his first championship title in the 2008 season after a dramatic finale.
Hamilton’s statement
“It’s honestly a huge honour for me to be here and to take citizenship. I really feel like I’m finally one of you,” said Hamilton, quoted by Racing News 365.
Hamilton further noted that he would like to dedicate this honour to Senna. To his family, friends and fans.
“I was five years old when I first saw Ayrton race and I knew at that moment that I wanted to be a world champion,” added the seven-time world champion.
