Lewandowski spoke about Mbappé and Haaland. How does he see their future compared to Messi and Ronaldo?
Robert Lewandowski has been one of the main stars of world football in the last two years, even winning the prestigious FIFA Best Player award twice. He is slowly trying to break the dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. How does he see the future of their most talked about successors?
Robert Lewandowski has been one of the main stars of world football in the last two years, even winning the prestigious FIFA Best Player award twice. He is slowly trying to break the dominance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. How does he see the future of their most talked about successors?
For a very long time, the star duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo ruled world football, with the Argentine winning seven Ballon d’Ors and the Portuguese five. During their dominance, only Croatian midfielder Luka Modric won the Ballon d’Or.
However, the most talked about performance in the last two years has been that of Robert Lewandowski, who now finished second in the Ballon d’Or poll, but at least defended the award for best footballer, which is given by FIFA.
Many expect that, just as Messi and Ronaldo dominated football, the talents of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland will soon reign supreme. Lewandowski, however, doesn’t think so.
“They have the ability, but who knows if other strikers will emerge in the next two or three years? I can’t imagine for a moment that they will be able to dominate world football the way Ronaldo and Messi have done for the last 12 years,” Lewandowski told France Football.
Mbappé is now 23, Haaland 21. Given their stats, it is understandable that high expectations are placed on them. The Frenchman has scored 21 goals in 31 games this season, while the Norwegian has made 23 appearances in 20 duels, despite being troubled by muscle injuries.
Lewandowski believes that Messi and Ronaldo have made history by winning every trophy possible. He also expects several footballers to compete for the best footballer on the planet award in the years to come.
