He is one of Bayern Munich’s greatest legends and his word carries a lot of weight. His statement is all the more surprising. Sepp Maier praised the Bavarian giant’s new star. Harry Kane is more valuable than Robert Lewandowski.
Sepp Maier has spent his entire career at Bayern Munich. From youth to retirement. He was also a goalkeeping coach for many years. He’s practically inseparable from the Bavarian club. He played 706 matches for them, kept 217 accounts.
So when the almost 80-year-old legend makes a statement today, it carries a lot of weight. It’s worth mentioning that he won the World Cup or European Championship with Germany, he also won trophies with Bayern.
Now, Maier has decided to make a bold statement in a comparison that is downright revealing. For another star has shone over the Allianz Arena since the new season, having arrived from London. Naturally, it is Harry Kane, the Tottenham icon.
In him, Bayern have finally acquired the top striker the club has been missing since the departure of sharpshooter Robert Lewandowski. The Polish goalscorer has made his mark on the club’s history. After all, he has scored 344 goals in 375 games and is the second highest scorer in the club’s history after Gerd Müller.
Kane, however, makes Lewandowski a bit forgettable. In his first season in Munich, he is already on course to surpass the Barcelona player.
Is Harry Kane more valuable than Robert Lewandowski?
Both Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski have long been among the best strikers on the planet. The Pole was even close to winning the Ballon d’Or, the Englishman is still to come. It certainly should be if he continues the performance he is now dragging Bayern Munich through.
Kane has scored 21 goals in his first 15 Bundesliga games. He is thus on course to break Lewandowski’s record from the 2020/21 season, when the Pole netted 41 league goals in a full season.
“Harry is a very suitable type of player for the Bundesliga. He is clearly more valuable than Lewandowski was. One could have expected him to do well at Bayern, but his performances have been extraordinary. There are hardly any words to adequately describe him,” Sepp Maier told Sport1.
“The special thing about Harry is that he works for others. It shows how much Bayern have already internalised,” Maier added.
Kane is useful for Bayern not only in the sixteen, which was Lewandowski’s strongest point. Because he is more complex, he can also create, he is a threat outside the sixteen. Overall, he has already netted 25 goals and added 8 assists, counting the stats from all 22 competitive games he has played in.
