Lewandowski disappointed with the Ballon d’Or: Let Messi say it honestly, I don’t want empty words

The Ballon d’Or was awarded at the end of November, but Robert Lewandowski has not yet absorbed the disappointment of the announcement. According to many experts, former and current players and fans, he should have won instead of Messi, which is what the Polish sniper himself thinks.
Lewandowski has been scoring one goal after another over the last year, even keeping a streak of scoring in every competitive match for Bayern from March to October. He won the Bundesliga title, broke Gerd Muller’s dusty record of 40 goals in the Bundesliga, and was injured when he was knocked out of the Champions League.
He probably couldn’t have done more. And then he had to watch the Golden Ball for the best player of 2020 go to a player who has scored a single league goal since May and 4 club goals overall since November. It’s clear that Lewandowski was left with a huge disappointment. As amazing and superhuman a player as Messi is, there is simply no one more deserving this year than Lewandowski.
The Argentine footballer at least gave him a pat on the back during his speech. “Last year everyone agreed that you were the winner. And I think France Football should give you the award because you deserve it,” Messi said of Lewandowski. But these words rather annoyed the Polish footballer.
“I’m not very excited about receiving the 2020 award. I would like it (from Messi) to be a sincere and polite statement from a great player and not just empty words,” Lewandowski told Poland’s Kanal Sportowy.
“I felt sad, I can’t deny that. I can’t say I was happy, quite the opposite. To be so close, to compete with Messi. Of course I respect how good a player he is and what he has done. But just the fact that I can compete with him shows me what level I was able to reach,” the Bayern striker is looking for positives.
Many experts and former and current players, such as Iker Casillas, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller and Alphonso Davies, have taken Lewandowski’s side. The entire Bundesliga was also very unhappy with the results of the vote.
“I want to concentrate on other things now, but being so close and far away at the same time leaves a bit of a bitter feeling. I’m carrying it around and it will take a bit of time to deal with it,” Lewandowski added.
On the field, though, it doesn’t show. the 33-year-old scored two goals in Bayern’s 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund at the weekend. And on Wednesday, he will have the opportunity to get at least a little revenge on Barcelona, even though Messi is no longer there. And who knows, maybe Bayern will face PSG in the Champions League, as the French colossus is surely already moving up from second place.
