Yesterday’s quarter-final set another record!
Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak now stands at an incredible 44 competitive matches. This is currently the best record for a club playing in one of the top five European competitions. Until now, the holder of this title was Juventus Torino, who were unbeaten in forty-three matches in 2011 and 2012.
The defeat to West Ham was averted by Frimpong at the last moment
Meanwhile, the pharmacists almost failed to reach this milestone. They were up against England’s West Ham in the quarter-finals.
After a 2-0 home win, the German team wanted to defend their unbeaten record in addition to the promotion result, but their plan soon became complicated. Bowen’s centre was headed behind Matej Kovar by Antonio, and the visitors had to finish the game.
Just when it seemed that Leverkusen would not be able to break through and their long streak would be over, Jeremie Frimpong stepped up with an individual effort to level the match at 1-1. Thanks to his goal, Bayer broke Juventus’ previous record.
The remaining draw is quite difficult
Will Alonso’s team be able to finish the season without the bitterness of defeat? To do so, they will need to manage nine more games. Especially the first one at Dortmund will be very difficult, then Leverkusen will host another team from the top of the Bundesliga – Stuttgart.
Then it will be the first semi-final clash with AS Roma in the Europa League, starting there on Italian soil. Before the home rematch, Bayer will play in Frankfurt, and after the aforementioned semi-final, they will have a pair of last league games in Bochum and at home to Augsburg.
The aforementioned DFB Pokal final is also on the agenda, and if everything goes well, Leverkusen will defend their unbeaten record in the Europa League final. This year, Dublin, Ireland, will host it.
