Bayer Leverkusen under new coach Xabi Alonso failed to win their first Champions League match. He didn’t follow up the weekend’s league win over Schalke. They fell 0:3 at home to Porto, with both Patrik Schick and Adam Hložek getting involved.

Well, that didn’t work out. After a successful Bundesliga debut, Xabi Alonso hoped his charges would do similarly on Champions League soil. In front of the home fans, the game against Porto seemed like the perfect opportunity.

However, in the sixth minute it became clear that it was not going to be easy. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa took advantage of Leverkusen’s slack defending and found Galen with a long throw-in for the first goal of the game.

10 minutes later, the German side were awarded a penalty. Surprisingly, Patrik Schick, who started in the starting line-up, did not make it. However, the fact is that his previous two penalties were saved by the Porto goalkeeper. And just as he saved Schick’s attempt, he also saved Kerem Demirbay’s attempt.

Leverkusen started the second half hoping that something could still be done. However, Porto scored another goal in the 53rd minute, closing the score to 3-0 in the 64th minute. Both goals were scored by Mehdi Taremi from the penalty spot.

The German side created chances but could not convert them. It was either the dedication of Porto players or the excellent goalkeeper Costa that shone through. But Leverkusen were also plagued by their own incompetence, with Schick also wasting big chances.

In the 69th minute, Adam Hložek also came on from the bench, but he didn’t revive the game. Leverkusen were already looking resigned and there was virtually no chance for the former Sparta star to change that.

Schick received an unflattering 5.8 rating from the prestigious WhoScored server and was the fourth worst player of the match. Hložek was rated 5.9.
