Leverkusen equal Bayern’s record! Xabi Alonso, however, refuses to celebrate and tames talk of a possible title win

Bayer Leverkusen are a little closer to the championship title again after Saturday’s match against Heidenheim. But neither the players nor the coach of the Bundesliga leader admit it yet. What did coach Xabi Alonso have to say about the match at Heidenheim?

There are still a good number of games left in the current Bundesliga season, namely 12 rounds. Although Leverkusen have already played the crucial game against Bayern and won it, they still have some tough games ahead of them.

For example, they have to face Dortmund, Stuttgart and Frankfurt. However, after Saturday’s win over Heidenheim, the Munich giant has slipped to an eight-point difference, but Bayern still have their Round 22 match to play.

This is also why coach Xabi Alonso is taming any talk of winning the title for now, as he is very aware of the various ancillary factors.

His charges scored for the first time at Heidenheim’s ground in the first half when Jeremie Frimpong scored after an assist from Amine Adli. Adli himself scored the second winning goal in the 81st minute, assisted by Florian Wirtz.

Leverkusen have never experienced the bitterness of defeat in the current competition season, equalling the record of Bayern Munich, their biggest rival for the title. Bayer can surpass that mark in their next match against Mainz.

“I won’t celebrate. I am satisfied with the team’s play, performance and result, but we have to continue in this respect. We are in a good place, but we have to concentrate on one game at a time,” Xabi Alonso said at the post-match press conference.

“We will need all the players in the next 3-4 months. Sometimes it’s not easy to decide who will play. But the players almost always understand and if they don’t, they can always talk to me about it,” the Leverkusen coach added.
