Leverkusen continue their great form. Where will they stop?
Any football fan who follows international football lightly will have caught the great form of Bayer Leverkusen. The Czech fan is disappointed that Adam Hložek or the (eternally) ill Patrick Schick did not contribute more to the success. The main reason behind the successful season so far is Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, who has managed to create an exceptional team.

A great transfer window
There was a bit of a turnover at Leverkusen over the summer. Mainstays Mitchel Bakker and Moussa Diaby had to pack their bags. The German side made a cool €65 million on these two players. Diaby in particular had been expected to make a big transfer for some time. Bakker moved mainly because he didn’t fit into Alonso’s plans. The striker Sardar Azmoun also went on loan.
However, the funds that appeared in the management account did not stay there for long. Alonso bought players that fit his system. Granit Xhaka arrived for 25 million euros from Arsenal and maintains some stability in the team between attack and defence. A great transfer was baked by Leverkusen for free when left wing-back Alejandro Grimaldo arrived and of course we must not forget cannonballer Victor Boniface.
Victor Boniface as an offensive powerhouse
The Nigerian marksman arrived from Belgian side Royale Union SG for only €20.5 million. Why only? This season, he has already scored 11 goals, 6 assists, all in just 17 games in which he has intervened in all competitions. Unfortunately for him, Harry Kane, who has already reached number 18, is unbeatable at the top of the Bundesliga scorers table.
Top of the Bundesliga
Leverkusen are at the very top of the German Bundesliga after 12 rounds. During the season, the team under the leadership of Xabi Alonso has only lost points for the draw with Bayern Munich, so no one in the team has still experienced a loss. When Boniface isn’t firing, Grimaldo, for example, can strike, and he has already scored 7 times.
First place in the Europa League group
As expected even before the first round kickoff, Leverkusen is sailing through the Europa League like a knife through butter. In a group with Karabakh, Molde and Hacken, it is unrivalled. In the opening 4 rounds, they have not lost a single point and boast a 12:2 record. Moreover, the German team is the only 100% team in the whole competition! Moreover, it is here that Matěj Kovář catches matches and gains great game practice.
Leverkusen by the numbers
Leverkusen have played 17 games this season and from the previous words it is clear that their record is excellent. Just to recap, 16 wins, 1 draw and no losses. Moreover, most of the games end with a higher goal difference, we won’t find 2 games in a row that end with only a one goal difference. The total score is therefore 62 goals scored and only 14 goals conceded.
If Leverkusen continue their excellent performances and do not take unnecessary losses to smaller teams as they did in the past years, they can end Bayern Munich’s domination. No other team, not counting last year’s Dortmund, which nevertheless benefited from the Bavarian side’s losses, has gone through the Bundesliga as easily as Bayer just this year.
