Bayer Leverkusen earned their first points in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday, beating Atlético Madrid 2-0 at home. Both Adam Hložek and Patrik Schick appeared in the starting line-up, but did not score.
The start of the match was cautious from both sides, but in the seventh minute Adam Hložek suddenly got a header, followed by Robert Andrich’s shot which went over. Otherwise, the visitors dominated, which culminated in the 22nd minute.
A great chance was wasted by Hermoso, but before that Edmond Tapsoba played a hand in the whitewash. Surprisingly, Michael Oliver did not call a penalty even after consulting VAR. Ten minutes later Felipe fired in the penalty area, but missed the Leverkusen goal.
Moussa Diaby’s shot closed out an uninspiring first half, but only hit the centre of the net. The game went into the final whistle without a goal.
The home side had a double chance early in the second half. First Patrik Schick hit the crossbar, then Adam Hložek headed into the left post. On the other side, Rodrigo de Paul shot dangerously, but Lukas Hrádecky made a good save.
In the 70th minute, Schick had a goal on his foot, but he missed the ball perfectly in the slide. In the end it was up and down, but both teams were inaccurate in the end. In the 83rd minute, however, the home stands exploded with joy.
After a good break, Andrich pushed his way to the back post, the Atlético goalkeeper got his hands on the ball but did not clear it. And three minutes later, the insurance came.
Diaby finished another break with a shot into a half-empty net. Leverkusen reacted to their opening loss to Bruges by beating Atlético 2-0.
