Leverkusen as we know it! Once again, he decided in stoppage time
The first round of the Bundesliga brought us Borrusia Mönchengladbach vs. Bayer Leverkusen. The match was full of twists and turns and the spectators were certainly entertained. Two goals were scored by the superstar Florian Wirtz and as we are used to, Bayer once again made the decision in injury time.
- Leverkusen followed up last season’s
- Two goals scored by Wirtz
- The decisive goal came in the 101st minute
Mönchenladbach and Leverkusen were in charge of the opening match of the German Bundeliga this season. The home side Borussia definitely planned to start the season with a win and try to surprise, but a tough opponent stood in their way. Last season they finished 14th and were only one point away from the relegation barrier. Despite this fact, she did not perform badly at all and managed to give the German champion a good beating.
First half
In the 12th minute, the favourites struck and Granit Xhaka sent them into the lead with a beautiful shot from outside the box, straight into the left post. He didn’t celebrate his goal in any way, as this is his former club, where he played from the 2012/13 to 2015/16 seasons.
The score was increased in the 38th minute by twenty-one-year-old Florian Wirtz, who found a deflected ball in the whitewash and sent the ball uncompromisingly into the net. He followed up his excellent EURO 2024 performance and continues to show what he’s made of.
The home side got their first goal in the 42nd minute, scored by Tim Kleindienst. Unfortunately, the goal was later called back for a foul and the score remained unchanged until the whistle blew. The score in the first half was 0:2.
Second half
From the edge of the second half, Nico Elvedi stepped up and reduced the score to 1: 2 in the 59th minute. A beautifully played standard situation offered a finish from which Elvedi made no mistake.
Tomáš Čvančara left his Czech mark on the pitch, coming on in the 71st minute. He failed to score, but he certainly helped his team and brought energy to the pitch.
Borussia managed to equalise at the end of normal time. Tim Kleindenst scored a goal, this time a regulation goal, to nurture the hopes of a good result from this match.
Penalty in stoppage time for Leverkusen
But it might not have been the so-called Neverlusen who won the penalty kick in the 98th minute. However, goalkeeper Jonas Omlin made an excellent save, he merely knocked the ball away and it was calmly headed into the net again by Wirtz. The game was thus decided in the 101st minute and disappointed all the home fans in the stadium.
