Leicester are experiencing their worst start this millennium. Vardy not happy, Schmeichel not replaced
Ten laps, five points, last place. Leicester are experiencing their worst league start this millennium, only drawing at home to Crystal Palace in the 10th round. Brandan Rodgers missed what may have been his last chance to hold on to the head coach’s job. What’s behind the Foxes’ crisis?
Ten rounds, five points, second to last place. Leicester are experiencing their worst league start this millennium, only drawing at home to Crystal Palace in the 10th round. Brendan Rodgers has missed out on what may be his last chance to hold on to the head coach’s job. What’s behind the Foxes’ crisis?
Leicester went into the game from last place in the table, with just four points after nine games played. They were three points behind seventeenth-placed Southampton, so a win could have put them in calm waters.
But Leicester couldn’t win this time either. Against Crystal Palace, they had 54% possession of the ball, outshot 14:8, but five shots between the three posts were defused by the visitors’ goalkeeper. Often the Foxes were unlucky, too, with the ball bouncing off the feet of players in good positions.
The quality of the squad makes Leicester a cup aspirant. James Maddison and Youri Tielemans would probably play at any club in the Premier League, James Justin and Harvey Barnes are considered the future of the England national team.
The main reason for the crisis seems to be the woes of club legend Jamie Vardy. He has not scored once so far, only assisting three goals. His poor shooting form is also evident in his performances, he was pushed out of the line-up by Patson Daka, but he is not doing well either.
At the same time, the departure of captain Kasper Schmeichel to Nice in France is showing. The management has not brought in a replacement for their number one goalkeeper and Danny Ward has certainly not adequately replaced the Danish star.
In any case, the Foxes have two chances to make a comeback next week. At home against Leeds they will miss the gutted Maddison, Leicester travel to Wolverhampton at the weekend. On paper weak and struggling teams against whom less than four points will be disappointing.
