Who will Lehečka and co. meet in the quarterfinals?
Jiri Lehecka’s sensational campaign continues
Jiri Lehecka reached a major milestone in his career at the Rotterdam tournament. The 20-year-old Czech played a great match and his victory was well deserved.
His eight-final opponent was Van De Zandschulp. The Dutchman was the clear favourite of the match, Lehecek could only surprise. The first set went exactly as expected, the Dutchman won it 6:1.
After a nervous opening set, Lehecka improved rapidly. Thanks to a better game concept, he won the second set 6::4, the winner of the match was decided in the deciding set.
In the first game of the 3rd set, Lehečka gained a break advantage, and it was looking very promising for his progress to the quarter-finals. The Czech youngster showed a great turnaround, which he was able to complete to a victorious end.
He defeated the Dutchman 1::6, 6::4, 6::4 and scored the scalp of another favourite. With this victory, Lehečka becomes the new Czech number one, moving up to 113th in the rankings. In the quarter-finals he will play against Italian Musetti.
Kvitova’s rise is in sight
The women’s tennis circuit visited St. Petersburg, Russia, with Petra Kvitova the biggest Czech hope. The two-time Grand Slam winner took on Neimeier in the first round, beating her German opponent 6: 2 and 6: 1.
She had a tougher task in the eighth round, her opponent was Romanian Begu. The Czech favourite did not have a good start to the match, losing the first set 4::6. The rest of the match was clearly in Begu’s control.
There was no big turn in Kvitova’s performance. The Romanian beat her 6: 4, 6: 0 and deservedly advanced to the quarterfinals.
Petra Kvitova’s woes continue. Begu’s next opponent will be Tereza Martincova. The Czech advanced to the top 8 thanks to the withdrawal of the favourite Rybakina.
Jiri Vesely also had an eight-final match at the Indian Challenger in Bengaluru. His opponent was the local Gunneswaran. The paper assumptions favoured Vesely, who fulfilled the role of the tournament leader. However, the first set did not correspond to that, the Indian player won it 6::3.
After that, Vesely managed to improve, which set him on the path to a winning turnaround. He defeated his opponent 3::6, 6::2, 6::1, thus fulfilling the position of the clear favourite of the match. In the quarter-finals he will face Couacaud of France.
