The native of the Argentine city of Rosario has led the team from Leeds since 2018, when he very quickly won the hearts of the fans from the city on the river Aire. In 2020, he fought his way back to the Premier League with United after sixteen long years.
However, the team from the north of England is not doing very well in the spring part of the current season. Leeds won their last game on 16 January away to Soucek’s West Ham (3::2). In February, however, they lost their last four games with a terrible score of 2::17.
In December Leeds lost 0::7 to Manchester City. Apparently, matches against the leaders of the league table give United the biggest problems, especially in defensive activities. This may be, among other things, due to Bielsa’s philosophy of fast attacking football.
Club chairman Andrea Radrizzani commented on the coach’s sacking on the club’s website, “With Marcel as head coach we have had three incredible seasons where good times have returned to Elland Road. He changed the culture of the club and inoculated us all with a winning mentality. The amazing moments, especially in the 2019/20 season and promotion to the Premier League, will of course live long in all our memories, including mine and our fans.”
Bielsa’s successor will be announced in the coming days. He will probably be expected to radically improve the defensive phase of the team. Meanwhile, there is speculation about former RB Leipzig coach American Jesse Marsch.
