Lakers score 31 points in must-win win over Wizards, LeBron James
The Los Angeles Lakers vs. Washington Wizards (134:131) had to be decided in overtime. In the end, the Lakers fulfilled their role as favourites. LeBron entered the game 40 points short of the 40,000-point mark. And it was against the Wizards that he erased a significant part of the deficit.
The duo of Anthony Davis and LeBron James combined for 71 points. And it was the Lakers star who chipped away another 31 points to break the magic mark. So it’s almost certain that they will break that mark in their next game, and it will be on their home floor, where the Lakers take on the reigning champion Denver team led by Nikola Jokic.
Even at his advanced age, LeBron James is averaging 25 points per game and also holds the longest streak in NBA history with at least 10 points in a game in a row. Since he is only nine points short, we can expect the next game to be suspended by halftime, which will of course feature a spectacular ceremony.
But back to the game itself. The top scorer was the aforementioned Davis, who gave one of his best performances of the season. He poured in 40 straight points. He also had 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. LeBron James added 9 assists to his 31 points.
The Lakers entered the game as a clear favorite, but Washington unexpectedly resisted and even took the game into overtime. The biggest contributor was former Golden State player Jordan Poole, who scored 34 points for the Lakers. However, LeBron James played a significant role in the overtime.
He first blocked Poole’s layup and then made a successful three-point attempt himself, prompting Davis to score with his ninth assist of the game.
In the end, the Lakers were lucky to get their 33rd win of the season, as they are still fighting for a playoff spot and a loss to the Wizards would be a big loss. In the end, Washington managed to beat them for the 13th consecutive game. The Wizards ended up losing their 50th game of the season after a heartbreaking performance.
