Lawson will also ride the Italian Grand Prix after a rough debut! Team AlphaTauri spoke about Ricciardo’s current condition
Liam Lawson made his debut in the Dutch Grand Prix. In the second car of the Scuderia AlphaTauri team, he replaced Daniel Ricciardo, who broke the metacarpal bone in his left hand during the second free practice session and was unable to start the race at the Zandvoort circuit. Then on Monday night, the Italian stable confirmed that Lawson will also ride the Italian Grand Prix.

He couldn’t have made his debut in worse conditions. New Zealander Lawson qualified for the Dutch Grand Prix in 20th place, but in the race itself he was already doing very well for a Formula One rookie.
In any case, the weather was not really in Lawson’s favour on his debut. Almost immediately after the start of the Dutch Grand Prix it started to rain, then the situation settled down, but at the end of the race there was more rain, but this time it was a torrential downpour.
It was a very tough test for the drivers who were driving a Formula One car for the first time in the harsh conditions. And probably no one would be surprised if the rookie driver couldn’t handle the steering of his monoposto in such difficult conditions and crashed into one of the barriers.
Lawson, however, handled it brilliantly, having to deal not only with the adverse conditions but also with the chaos that the situation caused. Of course, we’ll take a closer look at the Dutch Grand Prix in a follow-up report.
The New Zealand driver eventually finished in thirteenth place, beating even his much more experienced teammate Júki Cunda, who finished fifteenth. And with Ricciardo still not recovered from his injury, and likely not to be well for a long time, Lawson will also drive in the upcoming Italian Grand Prix.
Surgery successful, AlphaTauri confirms Lawson as replacement
Ricciardo still travelled to Barcelona during the race weekend in Zandvoort, where he underwent surgery. According to Red Bull boss Christian Horner, it was a straightforward procedure, so it now depends on how long the recovery takes.
“We are pleased that Daniel’s surgery went well and that he is now on the road to recovery,” the team said in an official statement.
“We hope to see him back on track soon, but until he is fully fit we can confirm that Liam, who did a good job in difficult conditions in Zandvoort, will continue to ride alongside Yuki, starting with our home race this weekend at Monza,” the AlphaTauri team added.
