La Liga will encourage clubs not to allow players on the national team. It is also prepared to take legal action
National breaks are a perpetual burden for clubs. It often happens that a player returns to his staff injured or at least very tired. Even more so when the national team has to interfere with the fixture list. La Liga has now decided to fight against this.
National breaks are a perpetual burden for clubs. It often happens that a player returns to his staff injured or at least very tired. Even more so when the national team has to interfere with the fixture list. La Liga has now decided to fight against this.
The whole problem arose when CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) scheduled three matches in one week, plus the last match already interfered with league competitions.
Brazil called up Casemiro and Eder Militao from Real Madrid, while Uruguay called up Federico Valverde. The two teams are due to meet on 10 September, but a day later, on 11 September, Real Madrid play their La Liga match against Celta Vigo. So there is no way these players will be available to the White Ballet.
And this is what La Liga has decided to fight against. The management of the Spanish competition has officially confirmed that it will support clubs that do not allow their South American players to attend the September meetings. This is due to the possible quarantine that would await the players upon their return.
La Liga thus followed the Premier League, which made the same decision earlier in the week. The La Liga management is possibly prepared to take legal action.
“LaLiga wishes to communicate that it will support in all areas the decision of Spanish clubs not to allow their players from the national teams to be called up by CONMEBOL and will take the appropriate legal action against this decision, which affects the integrity of the competition by not allowing the availability of players to clubs for league matches,” La Liga said in its official statement.
