Kylian Mbappé leapfrogs Karim Benzema thanks to goals against the Netherlands! Will he soon surpass Platini?

France clearly dominated their first qualifying match for the 2024 European Championship, beating the Netherlands 4-0. In addition to a great result for the French, this match also offered an individual success for Kylian Mbappé. He surpassed Karim Benzema in the number of goals scored in the national jersey with his second goal.

The France national team made its first competitive appearance after losing the final at the World Cup in Qatar and declared its assault on the European title. The biggest star of the selection of coach Didier Deschamps followed up the excellent performance at the World Championship.

Already before the match, Deschamps announced a change in the captaincy of his team. The captain’s armband has been taken over by the still young striker Kylian Mbappé after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who announced his retirement from the national team at the beginning of January.

At this point, he has now caught up with Karim Benzema, who will not continue his national career. Mbappé also scored his first goal as France captain.

The home team created other good chances during the match, one of which was created by the PSG star, but his attempt was denied by goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

However, the 24-year-old forward added one more goal anyway, after a beautiful individual action, which he capped with a goal in the 88th minute. And it was thanks to this goal that he surpassed Benzema in terms of goals scored for France.

Mbappé became France’s fifth top scorer with 38 goals. He is currently three goals short of Michel Platini’s fourth place. The Dutch took a penalty kick late on, but AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan showed his form to keep out Memphis Depay.
