Kvitova’s start of the new season was not a success! Will she succeed at the Australian Open?
Petra Kvitova has not had a completely successful year in 2021, in which she added only the Doha trophy to her collection. The thirty-one-year-old tennis player did not have a good start to the new season either. Will she get back to her ideal form in the coming days or will she say goodbye to the Australian Open in the opening rounds?
Petra Kvitova has not had a completely successful year in 2021, in which she added only the Doha trophy to her collection. Even the start of the new season was not very successful for the thirty-one-year-old tennis player. Will she get back to her ideal form in the coming days or will she say goodbye to the Australian Open in the opening rounds?
In 2021, Petra Kvitova didn’t fare too well. Right from the start, however, we must point out that this was due to frequent health complications. In the previous twelve months, Kvitova managed to play 44 matches, of which she won 28.
This is not a bad record, but in the past we were used to better numbers from her. In the WTA rankings, the two-time Wimbledon winner has therefore dropped from eighth place to seventeenth, where she is currently.
Even at the start of the new season, Petra Kvitová is not in an optimal mood. She played her opening match of 2022 against Priscilla Hon of Australia, a player ranked third in the rankings. However, her coach Jiri Vanek’s charge lost after 7::6, 5::7 and 2::6.
“My 2022 season may have started with a tough loss, but it was a great battle and I was happy to be back there. See you soon in Sydney,” Kvitova wrote on her Instagram account after losing the match.
But the question remains as to what form Kvitova will be in at the looming Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. Given the absence of Karolina Pliskova, she will be our second highest seeded tennis player (after Barbora Krejcikova).
A year ago, the six-time Fed Cup winner reached only the second round, where she finished on the racket of Romanian Cirstea after more than two hours of duel. The biggest favourite in this year’s edition will be the world number one Ashleigh Barty.
