Kvitova survived the insect hell and looks to fight for the eighth round with the victorious Pliskova
Petra Kvitová has been one of the most watched Czech players since the start of Wimbledon. Not to be. She’s won the title here twice. In her second-round match against Sasnovic, she had to deal with a few adversities. What doesn’t she like about her next opponent?
Petra Kvitová has been one of the most watched Czech players since the start of Wimbledon. Not to be. She’s won the title here twice. In her second-round match against Sasnovic, she had to deal with a few adversities. What doesn’t she like about her next opponent?
It’s been nine years since Petra Kvitova celebrated her second Wimbledon title, but her recent triumph on the grass in Berlin was another reminder that the thirty-three-year-old Czech is a force to be reckoned with. Kvitova is already in the third round at this year’s London Grand Slam, but her last match was far from easy.
The problems of the last match
The Czech tennis player’s second contest at this year’s Wimbledon was placed on court number two. A court that the Czech player does not really like. “Court number two is the slowest court in the venue in my opinion. I don’t have the best memories of it, but I also won a few times here,” she described the nature of the court and her experience with it, according to the Czech News Agency.
Kvitova extended her experience with court number two quite pleasantly with her winning duel against Belarusian Sasnovic. However, the court and her opponent were not the only obstacles that the two-time Wimbledon winner had to overcome in the match.
Once a year, according to the organizers, the All England Club is under an onslaught of insects. And this year it came out on the day of Kvitova’s match. “It was hell,” the Czech summed up the situation. “Some looked like ants and some looked like flies. Some were on the grass and some were in the air,” she elaborated on her insect horror at the prestigious tennis address.
The Czech tennis player overcame all the problems and defeated Belarus twice 6: 2. Now she is looking forward to the third round match. She finished here last year.
The battle for the eighth round
Her next opponent will be a player who is experiencing her first Wimbledon. Natalija Stevanovic crashed out in the third round of qualifying here last year, but this year she has already made it to the third round of the main event. Including her qualifying duels, she has already won five matches here without losing a set.
In the first round, the Serbian also took on Karolina Pliskova and very smoothly. Stevanovic won 6:2, 6:3. Kvitova knows what to expect from her game. She expects a lot of pivots from her opponent and would like to go to the net more herself.
And one more piece of information about her 28-year-old opponent Kvitova knows very well. “She’svery nice. Before the tournament, I was training next to her and it was terrible,” she says about her opponent.
Kvitova is the favourite for the duel. She will be looking to advance to the eighth round, which would be her seventh in her career. The last time she reached this stage of Wimbledon was in 2019 and let’s believe she has what it takes to reach that mark again.
