Petra Kvitová’s opening match at the tournament in Madrid, Spain, went well. And she didn’t even break a sweat. Her compatriot Marie Bouzkova abandoned the match in the second set due to a hand injury.
The pace of the match was dictated by the experienced Kvitova from the very first exchange. She dominated the first set 6:2. In the second set, the talented Bouzkova injured her hand and had to retire.
“I’m sorry it turned out like this. The match was at a good level and I hope Maruska will be fine,” said Petra at the press conference after the match.
In the second round of the prestigious 1,000-player Masters tournament, the thirty-one-year-old will face Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who defeated Markéta Vondroušová.
This will be the 14th time she will face her German opponent and it must be said that the Czech Republic’s representative is doing better so far. The balance is in her favour at 7-6.
Kvitova can therefore boost her confidence. Last week she missed a great opportunity to play the semifinals of the tournament in Stuttgart.
In the quarter-finals, however, she fell to Elina Svitolina in a well-played match. Because of this, she was unable to defend her 2019 trophy.
