Kvitova got a beating, Vondrousova and Machac are next. How did the Czechs do at the Australian Open?

The second day of the Australian Open was not very rosy from the point of view of a Czech fan. So far, five Czech players have been in action, only two have advanced further. However, Marie Bouzkova, who is still waiting for her match, can still improve this record.

The second day of the Australian Open was not very rosy from the point of view of a Czech fan. So far, five Czech players have been in action, only two have advanced further. However, Marie Bouzkova, who is still waiting for her match, can still improve this record.

The second day of the Australian Open offered six matches with Czech participation. The first to take the court in Melbourne was the twenty-year-old Jiri Lehecka, who made it to the main tournament through qualification. Unfortunately, he faced an opponent who was beyond his strength.

Lehecka (142nd in the ATP rankings) faced Grigori Dimitrov (30th in the ATP rankings) and although he won the first set 6:4, he lost the next three sets and lost 1:3 after two hours and 48 minutes.

Much better was the older Tomas Machac (132nd in the ATP ranking), who overcame Juan Manuel Cerundolo (80th in the ATP ranking) 3: 1 in a four-set battle after less than three hours. In two days he will play Maxime Cressy, who is ranked 70th in the rankings.

The women’s program from the Czech point of view started with Petra Kvitova (19th in the WTA ranking), who got a tough opponent. Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea (38th in the WTA rankings) had already beaten Kvitova at the Australian Open a year ago and she did it again. She won both sets by 6:2 and managed to do it in one hour and 12 minutes.

Kvitova did not do well at all on serve, she made six double faults and scored a single ace. Moreover, she got only two break points, she did not use even one, while her opponent used four out of seven.

Kateryna Siniakova (48th) did not fare much better, as she was unable to keep up with Anett Kontaveit (7th) and lost 2::6, 3::6. She spent one hour and 22 minutes on the court.

Markéta Vondroušová (41st) was another fairy tale, she handled Priscilla Honová (221) and won in two sets 6: 2, 6: 3 after one hour and 11 minutes. She will face a tougher opponent in the second round on Monday when she takes on the 37th player in the WTA rankings Liudmila Samsonova.

Marie Bouzkova (86th) closed the Czech participation on Tuesday with a win, defeating Rebecca Marinova (143rd) in two sets 6:1 and 6:3 in an hour and a quarter. Her opponents in the next round will be Angelique Kerber or Kaia Kanepi.
