The women’s tournament in Miami is entering its final stage, with the women’s eight-final matches awaiting them. Petra Kvitova and the talented Linda Fruhvirtova took part in these battles. The former succeeded in a battle full of twists and turns, while Fruhvirtova’s successful tournament came to an end in the eighth round, with the Czech comet falling to the Spanish favourite. What big challenge awaits Kvitova in the quarterfinals?
Kvitova has matured against Kudermetova
The Czech champion faced this Russian in the eighth round, the path to the quarterfinals was quite open. However, Kudermetova’s performance has been on the rise, and Kvitova’s form is not impressive. So this duel did not have a clear favourite.
A match full of twists and turns turned out better for Kvitova. However, the road to advancement was not at all easy. Right at the beginning of the match the Czech lost her serve, which was not an ideal start to the match. However, she managed to take back her serve on the return and levelled at 1: 1. Her game was getting better and better and it showed in the score. The 5::2 lead for Kvitova was already very promising.
But the Russian fought back, won 4 games in a row and had the chance to close the first set in her favour. However, she failed to do so and the tiebreak decided the winner of the opening set. In the end, the Czech won the shortened game 7:5 and took an important lead.
However, the Russian was not broken by losing the first set and kept fighting. In the next set she had an excellent start, her tennis showed a very high level of play. Kvitova, on the other hand, chose weaker moments in this phase of the match, but they did not last too long. Kudermetova dominated this set. With her leading 4::0 and 40::0, it seemed that the match would be decided only in the final set.
But then the Czech champion took a big turn. Kvitova did not drop a single game to her opponent, won 6 games in a row and brought this crazy duel to a victorious end. She defeated Kudermetova 7::6 and 6::4, already advancing to the quarterfinals in Miami.
This is her best result of the season (she also played the quarterfinals in Dubai). She has a huge challenge ahead of her to improve on that. In the quarterfinals she will face Swiatek, who is currently unbeatable.
The Pole won her last tournaments in Doha and Indian Wells, she is on a run of 14 wins in a row, and currently seems unbeatable. She will become the new world number one when the tournament is over.
Fruhvirt finishes in the eighth round
The 16-year-old Czech was waiting for another top rival. She was to face Badosaova for the quarterfinals, the Spanish tennis player is currently one of the best players in the world (3rd in the world). The Czech comet could only surprise.
Fruhvirtova had a relatively solid start to the match, she worked out several break points at 1::0. But she was unable to take advantage of them, which encouraged Badosa. The Spanish favourite started to dominate, she hardly made any mistakes and had more winning balls. She won the first set 6:2, not giving the Czech the slightest chance.
Fruhvirtova managed to improve in the next set, but it had no effect on the match. The Czech tennis player managed to take away her opponent’s serve and took the lead 2: 0. But this promising result did not last long.
Badosa won 4 games in a row, she was in full control of the match. the world No. 3 finally won 6: 2, 6: 3 and confirmed her role as the favourite. In the quarterfinals, she will face the home team’s Pegula.
Linda Fruhvirtova’s tournament journey ends in the eighth round, which is a great success for the young Czech. She used the wild card from the organizers in the best possible way. She defeated three strong players (Kovinic, Mertens and Azarenka).
She confirmed that she can compete with the best players. In the rankings, she moves into the top 200, which is a big breakthrough for her (she improves by 93 places in total). Fruhvirt is poised for a stellar career. The future of Czech women’s tennis seems to be as rosy as her present.
