Georgia made it through to the EURO via the barrages, where they first beat Luxembourg and then went on to knock out Greece in the deciding match, except for penalty kicks.
In the preliminary group of this year’s European Championship, they faced Portugal, Turkey and the Czech Republic, and at first it didn’t look like they would make it to the eight finals. In the very first match, they fell unluckily to the Turks and their chances of advancing were rapidly reduced.
Against the Czech Republic, the Georgians struggled and were not far from a drubbing, but their opponents’ missed chances secured them an important point. And with Portugal, it’s been a rollercoaster ride.
Georgia was the underdog, but they prepared well and came back to win 2: 0. The most surprising result of the whole tournament and Georgia can look forward to the eighth round against Spain.
“This is the best day in the life of football fans in Georgia. We have made history. Nobody believed we could beat Portugal and yet we did it and showed that we have a strong team.
We are extremely happy, but tomorrow we will start thinking about the next match,” said Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the star footballer of Georgia and Naples, after the match. But he did not want to name the best player of the match.
“But nobody was the best player, we played as a team and we showed everybody that we can play football,” the Georgia winger added. The latter can look forward to facing the Czechs again soon after the Euros, as they will play them in the Nations League.
